GETTING young boating enthusiasts interested in racing is the aim of a new junior class to be run in Victoria for the first time next weekend. The class is for eight to 16-year-olds and has been running for three years in Sydney.

The class, called J one, allows the use of boats of two to three metres long and engine power of just four kW _ a typical fishing ``tinny" for some enthusiasts of a quieter water sport.

The boats have tiller arm steering and resemble the boats used for the annual endurance race, the Goulburn Safari.

Already the J one class has three entries in the field of 35 boats which is expected to contest the Melbourne Runabout Speedboat Club's race meeting at Exford Weir at Melton on 14 November.

The J one class may be restricted in engine power but the top boats at the meeting will be running supercharged 454 Chevrolet engines in displacement on hydroplane hulls.

Entrants in the meeting will be coming from Adelaide, New South Wales and Victorian speedboat racing centres such as Glenmaggie, said the secretary of the Melbourne Runabout Speedboat Club, Mr Phil Norrish.
